Welcome to the city on the river Đetinja
Let’s go together, in words and images, through this city which lies among the hills, the city which has existed on this territory for almost seven centuries, always being the centre of a wider region. It is an urban settlement on the Djetinja, a lovely mountain river which serves as a refreshment to the city. The city was named after the narrow fields, the so called “uzice” and the river itself was named after the old folk question “dje tinja?” - meaning where can you hear the rustle, the whisper, the flowing of the river…
There is so much one can see and get to know here. The valuable edifices and ambient units, rich monumental and cultural heritage, various peculiarities of Uzice region, plenty of events and constant programmes, the hotels with decent accommodation, inns which have a soul, cafes which abound in entertainment…
We, the people of Uzice, popularly called “Ere” are proud to have had the first water plant in the Balkans, built according to Tesla’s principles of alternating currents. The building of our Grammar School has been more than a century old. Even older than it are St. George’s Church and St. Marko’s Church, and the oldest is certainly The Old Town, a medieval fortress on a hill above the river. We have the most beautiful city square and the river banks, the most delicious “lepinja – sa sve” (a type of flat bread), a unique theatre festival, the most modern building of the Archives, an unusual museum house from the 19th century, a cannon from World War II which can be seen in front of the National Museum, the monument to Tito in bronze, a competition in diving from the old railway bridge, the extraordinary trumpet players and tamburitza players…
No, we haven’t forgotten - there is plenty of the spirit of the City people, shrewdness and sensibility by which we are recognizable everywhere…
